Estimations are that a large part of the U.S. population with moderate to severe pain cannot be helped - 70% of those receiving pain medications are unhappy and would change if something else became available. Productivity losses resulting from pain are in excess of US$100 billion dollars annually. Approximately 40 million people are unable to find medications that provide relief from debilitating pain and over one million cancer patients suffer from inadequately controlled pain.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX), a natural substance found primarily in the fugu or puffer fish, is used by WEX to address pain. Through its proprietary platform technology based on WEX's developing drug portfolio the analgesic, detoxification and anaesthetic markets are addressed. The platform technology has the characteristic of being non-opioid (non-addictive) with a quick onset time.
