Vancouver, British
Columbia, September 24, 2004 - International Wex Technologies
Inc. (TSX: WXI), a pharmaceutical company that develops drugs for
the management of pain, today announced the presentation of two
posters relating to its Phase IIa study of tetrodotoxin (Tectin™),
an investigational treatment for the management of severe cancer-related
pain, at the 3rd World Congress World Institute of Pain in Barcelona,
Spain.
Dr. Ed Sellers, Director
of Psychopharmacology and Dependence Research Unit, Centre for Research
in Women's Health, Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences
Centre and President and CEO of Ventana Clinical Research Corporation,
was the Senior Medical and Scientific Consultant for this study.
Dr. Sellers used a novel graphic display of the results called
the Uniform Mosaic Display (UMD) to summarize the overall individual
patient responses over several days. Dr. Sellers concluded
that the UMD may be useful in identifying subjects who benefited
from treatment but was not necessarily reflected using the predetermined
primary objective pain intensity criteria. He also added that
the UMD may aid in designing further analyses or identifying useful
endpoints or composite endpoints for future studies. He concluded
that Tectin™ is effective in reducing pain in subjects with otherwise
intractable cancer pain and also appears to improve some components
of pain not reflected by traditional pain endpoints.
A second poster which
was prepared by Dr. Neil Hagen, head of Division of Palliative Medicine,
department of Oncology at the University of Calgary and the lead
Investigator of the study will also be presented which shows that
Tectin™ administered intramuscularly for four days has the potential
to produce sustained relief of pain that extends well beyond the
treatment period. This particularity may reflect a prolonged
disruption of the nerve sensitization, maintaining subjects' pain
relief.
Based on the findings
from the Phase IIa study, Wex recently announced the launch of a
pivotal trial implemented at 23 treatment centers across Canada.
This multi-centre trial is a randomized double-blind and
placebo-controlled study comparing the efficacy and safety of Tectin™
in patients with moderate to severe inadequately controlled cancer
pain.
