Fact Sheet
Business Description:
WEX Pharmaceuticals Inc.
("WEX" or the "Company") is a vertically integrated neuro bio-science
company focusing on solutions in pain management.
Technology:
Tetrodotoxin (TTX), a naturally-occurring sodium channel blocking compound found primarily in the fugu or puffer fish, is WEX’s platform technology and is used to address pain. TTX has the characteristic of being non-opioid (non-addictive), up to 3200 times stronger than morphine, and with only mild to moderate reversible side effects.
Products:
The WEX-based TTX platform indicates a variety of applications including analgesia (Tectin™), detoxification (Tetrodin™), and anaesthesia (Tocudin™). The Company is now concentrating on the development and commercialization of its lead product: Tectin™ for inadequately controlled cancer pain. The Phase IIa analysis
showed Tectin™ to be meaningful as it relieved chronic pain
in 71% of cancer pain patients.
WEX has received a No Objection Letter from Health Canada for conducting a Phase III clinical trial. This multi-centre, randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled trial (TEC-006) will include approximately 120 patients with moderate to severe cancer-related pain. A primary composite endpoint that evaluates pain reduction with an improvement in quality of life will be used to define true responder to treatment. The Company has also filed a US-IND to begin a clinical trial in the States.
Market:
In 2005 world-wide analgesic drug sales totaled US $50B of which cancer pain drug sales accounted for US15.2B and neuropathic pain for US2.4B. Detoxifacation drug sales totaled US$7.8B and anesthetic drug sales totaled US$2.7B.
Intellectual Property:
WEX currently holds the rights to 92 patents or patent applications filed in 31 jurisdictions which correspond to 16 patents families governing its product process, applications, and product formulation. WEX has registered its pharmaceutical grade TTX with Canada and the US through their Drug Master File.
Strategic Alliances:
WEX plans to develop additional strategic alliances with established pharmaceutical companies worldwide. Our partners will share the cost of late stage drug development and will market our products into their territories.
